I have been in Hexagon Heaven since beginning this quilt about three months ago. I have stacks and stacks of little hexagons cut out and ready to be basted, then sewn into the "flower" blocks. So far I have completed nearly 60 of these units, each measuring just over 7 inches across. I am using pre-cut 7/8 inch paper templates purchased from Paper Pieces . The "garden path" hexagons will be made of the solid green background fabric shown here in my photo. The fun is in combining the prints. I have to say here that I think that I was cursed at birth... As previously stated in an earlier post, I have this thing, this disorder, that compels me to make everything match. Using all of these colors together is not easy for me but when I lay them out all together like this on top of the background fabric, I can see that it's all going to work!
I don't have nearly enough fabrics. MUST BUY MORE! These 1930's Reproduction fabrics are harder to find than you might expect. But the good news is that I have been given a number of smaller pieces by generous friends who see me working on my quilt whenever my backside hits something solid. Their generosity is giving this quilt much more fabric variety than I could have managed on my own.
I am toying with the idea separating each flower with the little diamond shapes as pictured here, but of course, my paths will be green and the diamonds would be off white. I am asking myself just how many years I want to be working on this quilt? I have not answered that question just yet... since I have other quilts in my head that are begging to be made. All I know is that I am enjoying working on this now and am trying not to think too far ahead. It will be finished, one day... If I live long enough...
Wow! I love these. I just started half inch hexagon project. Don't know how big this will go, as I have done 169 so far and it's still only 12" across. I have lots of repro 30's too and this might be my next hexie quilt. You have inspired me. And good luck with yours. Regards Jayne from the UK. X
ReplyDeleteYou are VERY ambitious, Auntie Nettie! I am still plugging along on my hexie blocks. It's just about time to start putting the blocks together. I have been putting that task off because I really enjoy just making the blocks. It will be a bit more difficult and not quite as portable once I start putting them together.
ReplyDeleteVery nice blocks you have there! I agree that the prints are harder to find than I ever thought they would be. I have an old sampler candy tin that I carry around with my paper pieces and current hexes in. It is slow work because it is only done when I am away from the other gazillion projects I have going on ;o)... I just love the oldie prints especially the flowers and geometrics. Have a couple of large pieces if you want to send me an address I'd be happy to send you a fat quarter of a couple...Sewmonkey
ReplyDeleteI am working on this too; my centers are yellow, next round is solid Kona and then the 30's print. I'm surrounding them with KOna Snow and then will use the sage green for the garden path like in your picture. I've tried to stop buying 30's prints... but sometime they find their way home with me. I'm using 1-inch hexies from Paper Pieces for this one.. what size are yours? I've also got a Civil War project going with 1/2-inch hexies. So many projects, so little time.

ReplyDeleteI love the little diamond shaped outline. It's perfect. Great idea!! I'm working on Sue Daley's "Square Dance" right now and really enjoying it. I love the freedom of taking my work with me just about anywhere I go and not being tied down to my sewing machine. Love your 30's repo. fabric. Your quilt is going to be so worth all the work!

Lindy, Our anniversary is also in November, on the 8th. We were two Oh-So-Mature 19 year olds! We like to say that we grew up together, since we were such babies when we got married!
ReplyDeleteRegarding my hexies, I think that I could build these little flower units endlessly. I love choosing the fabrics and putting the units together. But it's time now to start making the quilt top and I am bogging down. I honestly don't know why... I think that I have enough to make the quilt top, just need to get with it.
